What is the value of a personal blog?

Food blogs challenge our culinary skills by inspiring us to try new recipes. News blogs keep us up to date with what’s going on in the world. And then you have the personal blog. What does a reader gain from reading someone’s weekly to do list or a recap of their weekend? What is the value of a personal blog? I’ve had some form of personal blog for over 12 years. The oldest post I could find online is from November 18, 2002: This blog was an online diary using Diaryland; I wrote a lot about wanting to lose weight and about my (many) unrequited crushes. I didn’t care if anyone was reading initially—which is good since you needed a paid account to accept comments and I was too thrifty for that. After a while, as I moved from blog platform to blog platform, eventually ending up on WordPress, I … Continue reading

Weekly to dos: eleven

Am I the only person having trouble keeping up with 2015? Something is UP with my time management so I took Monday off from work to focus on the Nigerian Blog Awards. It was a good move (I had a productive day), and it reminded me how nice it would be to work from home! Getting out of bed has been more of a challenge than usual each morning this week and I’m certain that I’m coming down with a cold! Though it’s days late, here’s a review of last week to dos.

This past weekend I discovered a couple who’ve been rocking the internet for while—Alex and Mimi Ikonn. If you’re an inspiration junkie like me you’ll fall in love with them. I’ve been watching their YouTube videos and I’m particularly resonating with the fact that they are Canadian immigrants, like me (and many others, of course). They lived in Toronto for most of their time in Canada; now they travel around the world and are currently living in London, England. I plan to share more about them this week, possibly on my newsletter rather than the blog, so you better sign up for it! Continue reading

Weekly to dos: nine

Just when you think you can’t stand the cold any longer, a long weekend in the form of Family Day comes on the third Monday of February. It’s extra cold outside so I’m going to spend the day at home, doing homey things like cleaning, purging junk, and maybe some gardening too.

My focus has to remain on NBA business. Once these Awards are over, I’m going to be recruiting a dream team of volunteers for a live 6th Nigerian Blog Awards in early 2016. More immediately, we need people to volunteer their time every four months to check one or two categories, to find blog links are no longer active. Berry Dakara has offered to go through some of them but we could definitely use more volunteers so if you have a good internet connection and an hour or so to click links, please let me know!

Done, though the job is not yet done.

Weekly to dos: eight

Each week I’ll post a portion of my to do list for the coming week. The following Monday I’ll update you, hopefully with pictures, and share my list for the next week.

It’s Tuesday and the second week of February already—God help us! Thank you to those who encouraged me and didn’t let me off the hook: I caught up on the items from last week’s list that I hadn’t done (I had that green smoothie and took that second walk). When I’m walking in -20 degree weather, with the cold, icy wind stinging my face, I think to myself It would just be easier not to eat junk food! but the feeling is short-lived. On a positive note I make better food choices after a walk.
