That was before

I performed the introduction,
and stepped back to avoid
the collision of hearts
that instantly followed.

(But was not supposed to happen.)

The stages blurred
due to their speed:
acquaintances, friends,
lover and beloved, then we.

But I remained and looked on.

For three years he was mine alone.
For what?
Coffee, innocuous conversation, laughs
over inconsequential things.

But no talk of love (mine for him), now faded.

She thinks she knows
my deepest wish,
thinks I would slip
my hand into his in the dark.

That was before…

…I introduced them
…he chose her
…I fell too deep.

Sweetheart. This was so lovely. Keep it up and if it is autobiographical, you get a HUGE hug from me. XOXO

  2. awww….. sometimes the overly good guy/girl loses out.. But what the heck! As Amy said in Little women

"You don't need scores of suitors. You need only one… if he's the right one".

  3. nicely written, love is complicated at times. The guy is a weirdo for not falling hard for you…urs is coming and the best for you.

  4. Oh my…so sad. I think one of the hardest things for our hearts to take is to love and not be loved back in the same way or intensity.

But that was before eh, there's love waiting for you just around the next bend!

  5. Poetry now? You're so Smart! and i'm soooo jealous…one person with too many creative talents! gosh!

Well written sha…and i say that just because….

    (how u dey dear?)

  6. Wow…….tres deep.

Aww, it's not that dire! Sorry it makes you feel bad :(

What a compliment, coming from you!

Thanks for the hug. The poem, exactly as it's written is not autobiographical, though there are many elements of truth.

You're right that it's not pleasant!

    Thank you.

    I feel you.

Thank you. Life isn't always fair (according to our definition of fair), is it?

I'm sorry you've had to experience it. It's not pleasant.

Yes, bittersweet is the word for it. We thank God for time and its healing effect on situations like that.

That saying is so true! I fully believe it, and I'd add to it that you don't want someone who doesn't want you back. That's a recipe for disaster.

    Thank you :)

Amen, and we thank God that better things are coming!

Thanks lady. There is always room for improvement though, and I know that I am growing and improving to be the best person I can be for the RIGHT person.

Thanks my dear! Don't be sad.

You're right! And writing about feelings is such a cathartic activity.

Thanks a bunch. I hope people see the strength at the end.

I love poetry, and the challenge that comes with picking the right words to convey your feeling or the feeling you're trying to invoke.

(I dey my dia! I miss you!)

Thanks for your comment, I'm glad it spoke to you.

It's always nice to know that someone else has felt the same way…mixed feelings is right!
